Rhys is first introduced in the first episode of season 4, when Joe meets different characters. Joe becomes aware of the existence of Rhys when he receives a copy of his autobiography. It is to save Marienne that Joe takes revenge on Rhys. Backed by Tom Lockwood, he stalks Rhys to his family home. Joe forces him to reveal where he was keeping Marienne, but Rhys denies knowing her and claims to have never met Joe. This infuriates Joe even more, and in his anger he kills Rhys. While he is shocked to have wasted his only chance to find Marienne, another shock awaits him.
As Joe looks at the corpse of Rhys in front of him, a other Rhys comes on stage and it’s not his twin. This Rhys is alive and shows no signs of torture. Joe thinks he suffered trauma after killing Rhysand that this other Rhys is a hallucination and not a twin. He is partially right.
The second Rhys is really a hallucination, but it’s not the first time that Joe has seen it. The truth Rhys told the truth. He never spoke to Joe, they were never even introduced. Over time, his bad side craved to be accepted by Joe. She wanted to be accepted by Joe and so showed up as someone Joe could befriend. All the times Joe thought he was talking to Rhyshe was talking to himself and his other side, which remained secret until he killed the true Rhys, and let the truth about his fractured mindset come to light. He had never befriended the true Rhysthere was no twin. Joe had hallucinated him.
