Yes, UnPrisoned is inspired by true history by creator and screenwriter Tracy McMillan. The basic idea of the series, which focuses on the broken relationship between Paige and Edwin, is taken directly from the writer’s life.
Ms McMillan, who is also a people expert, social media influencer and personal development blogger, wrote the character of Paige in her likeness, giving her the same childhood and, therefore, the same struggles that Ms. McMillan went through in her life. The idea of writing UnPrisoned came to her as she was considering the possibility of meeting her father, who was serving a 19-year prison sentence.
As soon as she started thinking about it, she became anxious, which led her to concoct a scenario in which he would come to live with her and her son. In describing the issues she and Paige face, Ms McMillan became ‘very scientific’ about ‘the relationship concepts that are on the show’ .
Ms McMillan said her intention in creating ‘UnPrisoned’ was to ‘change the hearts and minds around people who have been affected by the ™mass incarceration”. Considering all of this, it is clear that Ms. McMillan has invested herself body and soul in this story, which reflects her life. In some ways, the series departs from the story of Mrs. McMillan and takes on a life of its own. However, UnPrisoned based on the true story of the writer.
