Before all hell breaks loose, Joel and Ellie have time to explore Salt Lake City, share secrets, and reveal how they really feel about each other. For 20 years, Joel carried the pain of losing Sarah, an emotional distress that drove him to become increasingly violent.
Which is why Joel is upset when he finds out that the Fireflies are going to sacrifice the young girl in exchange for a cure for the Cordyceps infection. Ellie’s mother gave birth to her child moments after being bitten by an Infected. As a result, Ellie developed a unique type of fungal infection that didn’t take over her nervous system.
The side effect of Ellie’s infection at birth is that the deadly strain of Cordyceps identifies the girl’s body as infected, and therefore does not attempt to take control of it. Ellie’s death is the key to humanity’s salvation.
