David reveals that his group is made up of cannibals and asks Ellie to join them, then tries to kill her when she refuses. Joel leaves to save Ellie and finds David already dead before Ellie collapses in his arms. This is the first time Joel has truly acknowledged Ellie as his surrogate daughter.
