Steven Spielberg, the Oscar-winning director of many blockbusters and classic dramas, now tells the true story of the Fabelmans. Despite the name change, The Fabelmans is much closer to reality than one might think. So how much The Fabelsmans is inspired by a true story?
Is The Fabelsmans inspired by a true story?
Yes. The Fabelmans is based on the true story from the childhood of Steven Spielberg, who grew up as an aspiring filmmaker. Spielberg, in addition to directing, co-wrote the screenplay with Tony Kushner. Spielberg was inspired by the character of Sammy Fabelman. The famed director began writing a screenplay about his family in 1999, titled I’ll Be Home, but he didn’t seriously consider directing the film until the pandemic hit.
Although Spielberg based The Fabelmans on his own family, he made some changes to his own story in the name of good storytelling. First of all, he obviously changed everyone’s names. Her parents’ real names were Leah and Arnold Spielberg, not Mitzi and Burt Fabelman; and the man Spielberg’s mother had an affair with was Bernie Adler, not Bennie Loewy. That said, as seen in the film, Spielberg’s mother was actually a pianist and his father was actually an electrical engineer, who moved his family from New Jersey to Arizona and then to California. The war movie that Sammy directs in The Fabelmans is based on an actual film directed by a young Spielberg, but the director changed the timeline: it took the teenager 25 days to shoot, not a weekend.
As for Uncle Boris, although he was modeled after an actual Spielberg uncle, he was largely fictionalized for the purposes of the film, as Spielberg didn’t know his actual uncle very well. Some of the film’s greatest emotional moments, however, are truesuch as the moment Sammy realizes his mother (is in love with and having an affair with longtime Fabelman family friend, “Uncle” Bennie.
