The Fabelsmans ending explained
At the end of The Fabelsmans, Sam moved to Los Angeles with Burt, while his sisters and Mitzi moved back to Phoenix with Bennie. The boy had continued his schooling. But while going to school, he had also written to every film and TV company in Hollywood asking for a job, with no response so far.
Burt has always acknowledged his own flaws in his personal life, and now he decides not to make the same mistakes with his son. He acknowledges and supports Sam’s decision, then hands him an envelope from CBS addressed to Sam. Opening it, the boy realizes that there is a job offer for him, and he goes to meet an executive from the studio.
Excited and nervous in equal measure, Sam enters the office and sits down, waiting for the director, before realizing who he is about to meet. With posters of all his famous movies hanging on the office wall, it’s clear that Sam is soon to meet John Ford. Ford, excellently played by David Lynch, then gives Sam some important advice on cinematography and framing.
Spielberg’s camera in The Fabelmans then tilts up, reframing the shot according to what John Ford has just said on his screen before cutting to the end of The Fabelsmans. This latest encounter is heavily autobiographical, since Spielberg himself met John Ford at a young age, and the final camera tilt is almost like a nod to one of his early inspirations and one of his first film teachers.
There end of The Fabelmans for Sammy is actually a start. Sammy will become a legendary filmmaker like Steven Spielberg, and everything that happened in The Fabelmans will one day allow him to transpose the story of his childhood into a feature film.
