Yes, Sex/Life is based on a true story. The series is based on “44 Chapters About 4 Men,” a memoir by BB Easton that details his sexually adventurous past. Published while she was working as a school psychologist, her book chronicles a very different time in her life when she had particularly wild relationships. Besides the detailed descriptions of the erotic adventures she had within the punk rock scene, she also describes the tumultuous emotional and sexual adventure with her husband after he discovered her past in his diary. The author’s past as a psychologist is also mentioned, Billie and her best friend Sasha being both psychology students. Although the story arc and dilemma of its main characters remain unchanged, Easton’s books have been extensively revamped to bring them to the screen. The series derives its authenticity in large part from the mostly female crew that backs it. The female perspective that Easton brings to her books was attempted to be retained through Rukeyser’s adaptation and also by having the series directed by women. Despite some embellishments and artistic license, Sex/Life retains most of Easton’s detailed memoirs. Therefore, yes Sex/Life is based on a true story.
