Explanation of the end of Noise
At the end of Noise, the truth behind Pol’s chemical plant secret is that there was no secret at all. Since the tragic death of his wife, Pol has always regretted his decision to save his infant son rather than his wife, which had a lasting effect on the relationship between father and son.
At the end of Noise, Matt mentions that his father was never satisfied or happy with what he was doing and was always very critical of him. This is directly due to Pol’s feeling of having lost his wife to his son, and Matt still longs for his father’s love and recognition.
In the end, Matt is convinced that digging the ground inside his house would reveal a chamber under the factory where the remaining corpses are. He begins to work in this direction, but instead of finding new evidence, he opens a hole in the water bed, which is possibly that of the nearby lake.
Matt is about to drown in the water when Liv rushes in and tries to help him. At the end of Noise, she too is dragged into the water, but eventually old Pol comes to their rescue, pulling them both out of the water and possibly restoring the relationship between father and son. At the end of Noise, Matt and Liv are seen in their house, having settled in, and both are standing on their lawn, staring out with happiness evident on their faces. But what exactly happens to Matt’s mental disorder is not discussed. He stares at the pond for a few seconds before smiling, perhaps suggesting that he, too, is thinking about drowning like his mother did.
