The film has small ambitions: it’s basically to play as an extended special episode of the series. It delivers on that promise but doesn’t do much more. Written by series creator Neil Cross and directed by James Payne, the film picks up where the series left off.
Luther has been disgraced and imprisoned while a psychopathic killer terrorizes London by planning and executing a series of gruesome public murders. Luther Fallen Sun was filmed in England, Belgium and Iceland, specifically in London, Dorset and Brussels. According to reports, principal photography for this thriller film began in late October 2021 and apparently wrapped around late 2021 or early 2022.
As most of the story takes place in England, the production team used many filming locations in England, which added a level of authenticity to the storytelling. Most of the key sequences of Luther Fallen Sun have been filmed in and around London. Some important exterior parts have been filmed on site in and around Piccadilly Circus, Air Street, Fleet Street and Chinatown.
Other parts of Luther Fallen Sun has also been filmed in Dorset, a ceremonial county in the southwest of England. In particular, the prison scenes involving Luther were shot in HM Prison Dorchester in Dorchester. For filming purposes, the filming unit of Luther Fallen Sun also traveled to Brussels. They would have used the facilities of the Lites studio, located Fabriekstraat 81 in Vilvoorde, a municipality in the Flemish province of Flemish Brabant.
Some important sequences of Luther Fallen Sun have been filmed in Iceland, a northern island and the least populated country in Europe. Cast and crew members were lucky enough to witness magical Northern Lights.
