However, as the movie’s release date approaches, some of us are having a hard time remembering exactly where Luther’s fifth season ended and where we left off the cast. Here’s a quick recap of Season 5 and the answer to why the main character, John Luther, is in prison at the start of the upcoming movie…
Why is Luther in prison?
Over the course of five seasons, the conflict between Luther and Alice escalates until it reaches a breaking point. In the fifth season finale, Alice kills Detective Catherine Halliday. Luther confronts Alice, resulting in a fight on the roof that results in Alice’s apparent death. Luther is then arrested and brought to prison for his involvement in Alice’s crimes.
There season 5 of luther ends with Luther in handcuffs, escorted by police in prison. However, viewers do not get a plot resolution as Alice does not appear in the film’s sequel. Additionally, Luther continues to perform his duties as a police officer and appears to have been cleared of the crimes he is accused of at the end of the fifth season. It is likely that the police did not find strong evidence of Luther’s involvement in Alice’s crimes.
In the movie now, Robey leaks details of Luther’s crimes and Luther is arrested. In the TV series, Luther is cast as a morally gray character who doesn’t hesitate to bend the law to pursue dangerous criminals.
The continuation of movie Luther Fallen Sun tackles Luther’s dark past by forcing him to face the consequences of his crimes. Consequently, Luther is imprisoned after Robey reveals the details of his crimes. He is held in Turfsmoor Prison until Luther manages to escape and reunite with Robey, setting off a thrilling chase through London.
