The trailer for a new movie called crazy bear aired Wednesday, and the film’s title isn’t a clever metaphor or pun: the film is about a bear under the influence of cocaine. To find out when the film will be released on Netflix, it’s here.
The killing spree that follows the bear’s cocaine as depicted in the trailer is fictional, but the story of a stoned bear is real. Her story is likely to expand with the film, which was directed by Elizabeth Banks. But then what becomes Crazy Bear today ?
What becomes of Crazy Bear today?
Unfortunately, today Crazy Bear is dead. Unlike his much larger and menacing on-screen counterpart, the real bear (aka Pablo Eskobear) was a 175-pound American black bear. On September 11, 1985, Andrew Thornton II, a former narcotics agent turned drug trafficker, smuggled a 400-kilogram consignment of cocaine into the United States from Colombia.
To lighten the load from his small plane, he dropped three bags containing the drugs while flying over the forests of Tennessee. Interestingly, Thornton died later that day during a failed ejection attempt, his parachute having malfunctioned. On December 23, 1985, they found the corpse of a 175-pound American black bear in the nearby mountains of Fannin County, Georgia.
Unfortunately, the poor creature had accidentally discovered and ingested a large amount of cocaine thrown away by Thornton and died about four weeks ago from a fatal overdose. Next to the bear, officers found an empty sports bag and 40 packages of cocaine, all of which were punched open.
While it was initially announced that the bear had consumed the full 75 pounds of the drug, an autopsy later clarified that he had only absorbed three to four grams into his blood when he died. Although he was able to consume more, much of the missing cocaine was suspected to have been stolen by a human. To find out where the film was shot, it’s here.
The bear suffered from multiple health problems that led to his death: cerebral hemorrhage, respiratory failure, hyperthermia, kidney failure, heart failure and stroke. Additionally, the medical examiner said the bear’s stomach was “literally filled to the brim with cocaine.” As a result, today Crazy Bear is really dead.
After a long search, the employees of the mall finally found its last owner in Reno (because yes the corpse was kept and passed from person to person). Zhu T’ang’s widow sold the bear to them at a very low price, and it was brought to the Fun Mall in Kentucky for display. Today Crazy Bear is the mall’s official mascot and a popular tourist attraction.
