Is Chang’s Bet based on a true story?
No, Chang’s Bet is not based on a true story, but writer and director Jingyi Shao drew on his own teenage experiences to write this story. Shao extrapolated the idea of self-esteem and started thinking about his teenage life, especially his relationship with his mother. Reflecting on the essential role of family in the stories of Asian Americans, the director said telling these stories is an attempt to heal on their own terms.
He revealed that he sometimes felt a lack of support from his parents in pursuing his dream, but it was this dream that brought him closer to his parents, as he was “capable of empathy and sympathy for them [et] to understand their journey and their struggles”. The biggest reason Shao wrote this story is that he wanted to create something he would have liked to see when he was a teenager. To know the explanation of the end, it is here.
In view of all this, it is clear that even if Chang’s Bet is not based on a true story, Jingyi Shao imbued it with her own experiences to make it as real and relatable as possible.
